Isles of Scilly Facts

Isles of Scilly is a small UK archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean in the western part of the English Channel. The archipelago is located around 45 km southwest off Lands End in Cornwall. On the islands the landscape is dominated by granite massives with rugged cliffs and many underwater reefs. The area is about 16,3 square kilometers and 1,682 inhabitants are living on the islands. The archipelago consists of 5 inhabited islands and around 145 uninhabited islands.

Travel to Isles of Scilly

The residents mainly live of tourism. It is very popular to travel to Isles of Scilly and the major tourism is mainly due to the special environment, culture and climate you find on this UK archipelago. Many people visit Isles of Scilly in October due to the huge amount of birds that passes the islands. There are plenty of accommodation facilities on the island.

Isles of Scilly Climate

The location of this archipelago close to the gulf stream has a huge effect on the climate. The warm sea water means that frost and snow is very rare and gives an absolutely different climate relatively to the mainland of Britain. During  winter heavy wind and storms are very frequently seen. Sheltered from the harsh westerly winds there are favorable conditions for the growth of exotic vegetables, flowers and plants. Due to the mild winters and many hours of sunshine the flora is very similar to the flora found in the Mediterranean region. For example palms are very commonly found on the islands. Together with the beautiful white beaches and the azure sea many north Europeans would definitely characterize the Isles of Scilly as a subtropical paradise. That’s why the islands is a very popular tourist destination.
