Lake Bled Slovenia
The area of Bled Lake is indeed the best place to visit in Slovenia. The town and the glacial lake of Bled is situated in the Upper Carniola region in northwestern Slovenia. Bled Lake is beautifully surrounded by the Slovenian Alps. Due to its natural beauty Bled is a popular tourist destination during summer as well as during winter. The area is located close to the highway and is easy accessible. Around the lake there are a lot of hotels and other kinds of accommodations. There is also a campsite at the lake. During high season (July to August) there is high risk of traffic jams in Bled, which is caused by the small roads in the area.
A small island in the middle of the lake is home to the Assumption of Mary Pilgrimage Church - there are 99 steps up from the dock into the church. You can take a boat taxi to the island. Next to the lake you can visit Bled Castle from where you have a stunning view over the lake and the high mountains. There is a parking place on top of the hill next to the castle. It is possible to drive around the lake close to shoreline. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to park along the shore. All the parking lots cost money.
Vintgar Gorge
Close to Bled Lake you will find the Vintgar Gorge. It is a very beautiful landscape and a good place for hiking. It is indeed a natural beauty in Slovenia. Vintgar Gorge is located just a few kilometers north of Bled Lake and it is possible to park just outside the entry to the gorge. I will really recommend you to visit Vintgar Gorge if you are in this area. There is a fee at the entry to Vintgar Gorge.
The area of Bled Lake is located very close to the Austrian border. Thus, the area is ideally for a one day trip if you are visiting Austria. Additionally, I will recommend to visit this area if you are on the way south to Croatia or north to Austria.
Radovljica
If you are in the neighborhood I will also recommend visiting the village of Radovljica. This a stunning and traditional Slovenian village located close to the highway a few kilometeres southeast of Bled Lake. Take a break here and enjoy a lovely dinner in one of the restaurants that offer local Slovenian food. There are parking facilities close to the center of the village. Some of the restaurants offer a stunning view over the Slovenian Alps.
