Pamukkale is one of Turkey’s top attractions and a precious in the world with its cotton-look terraces.
Pamukkale, which has been used as a spa since the second century BC, literally means “cotton castle” (from pamuk for cotton and kale for castle) in Turkish.
It’s located in the Denizli Province in southwestern Turkey. 250 km from Izmir and 20 km from Denizli. It is situated only a couple of hours drive from the resorts of Dalaman, Kusadasi, Bodrum and Marmaris.
The big attraction is a vast white cliff side with scallop-shaped basins of water and frozen waterfalls. It looks as if it’s made out of snow or cloud or balls of cotton. (see pictures below)
Travertine hot springs
For thousands of years a deep underground spring has been pouring out streams of hot, mineral saturated water. As it has flowed down the mountainside the steaming water has hollowed circular basins in the earth, and the waters rich mineral content has coated them in a smooth-layer of dazzlingly-white calcareous rocks.

In this area, there are 17 hot water springs in which the temperature ranges from 35 °C (95 °F) to 100 °C (212 °F). The Pamukkale hot springs flow at a rate of 400 liters per second.
Pamukkale Hot Springs can be visited all year long, but it is absolutely spectacular in the winter time, when natural pools of hot water form and tourists can take long, soothing baths.
The area was selected as a World Heritage Site back in 1988.
