What is the northernmost city in the world?
Alert, Qikiqtaaluk Region in Nunavut, Canada, is the northernmost permanently inhabited place in the world. Thus it is the most northerly town in the world located only 817 km (508 mi) from the North Pole.
Nunavut Alert is situated at the very top of Ellesmere Island and is the most northern town in Canada. It is located very close to the north coast of Greenland.

Alert in Nunavut is the most northerly town in the world.
According to the 2006 Canadian census, Alert is home to only five permanent residents, but the presence of a military intelligence facility adds 74 more temporary residents.
Nunavut Alert has polar climate. The weather is very cold with extremely cold winters, and there is snow cover for 10 months of the year. The sea is also covered by ice most of the year. During winter the temperature might drop to freezing 50 degree Celsius.
The warmest month, July, has an average temperature of just 3.4 °C (38.1 °F), with only July and August averaging above freezing. There is only 28 frost free days during an average summer. This makes Alert some of the coldest inhabited places on Earth.
