In summer 2017 I was visiting Hochosterwitz Castle in Austria and I can definitely recommend it. It is really worth a visit and I think it is a must see in Austria. In this article I will share you some interesting facts about this amazing attraction and show you some nice pictures.
The greatest medieval fortress in Austria
Hochosterwitz is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Austria and is one of the top places to visit in Austria. It is a great example of a medieval fortress and stronghold and is by many considered to be the greatest medieval fortress in Austria. In German the castle is called Burg Hochosterwitz. The castle is situated on a massive limestone hilltop. This rock complex has played a major role in the history of Burg Hochosterwitz.

Hochosterwitz castle is located in the Austrian province of Carinthia about 20 km northeast of Klagenfurt, which is the regional capital. The province of Catharina is a popular travel destination in Austria and I can recommend a day trip to Hochosterwitz. Carinthia (in German: Kärnten) is the southernmost state in Austria. The castle is easy to reach by car. From Klagenfurt just follow Klagenfurter Schnellstrasse (Road S37) towards northeast and take the exit at Sankt Veit Süd. Hereafter, follow Hochosterwitz Strasse towards east. At the destination there is a parking area just outside the entrance to the castle from where you also buy tickets in the information desk. There is also a souvenir shop and a kiosk. From the parking area the ascent to the castle starts. There is also a parking area down at the main road. From here you can walk up to the entrance though rocky paths.

What to do at Hochosterwitz Castle
Along the ascent there are 14 fortified gates (see the picture below). These are an important part of the huge defense system. I can recommend spending some time at these gates to discover all the details. The ascent is relatively steep and depending on your physical condition it might require a couple of rests. For example you can take a rest at the local church and garden where you easily can feel the history (see the picture below). Remember to enjoy the amazing views that only get more impressive with greater elevation. On the top there is a cosy and authentic restaurant where you can enjoy a nice meal, a cold drink or an ice cream. In addition, there is a museum where you can read and see everything about the castle and its fascinating history. Within the stronghold there are a lot of stairs and paths that the kids will love to explore. Furthermore, I can recommend to see the dungeon. Finally, I will say that this attraction is very family friendly. However, the ascent might be though for small children’s and for older people.
